Welcome

Welcome to the High 5 website for Highland Schools. This web site hosts a wide range of resources to help schools deliver effective, inclusive and progressive food & health education for children and young people, from pre-school to High school.

Our Early Learning and Childcare programme is called ‘Smart Start’.

Our primary school programme is called ‘High 5

Our High school programme is called ‘Food & Mood’.

The lesson plans and supporting resources have been carefully developed and thoroughly piloted and evaluated, using the skills of teachers and the knowledge of health improvement specialists.

  • Children and young people who experience these programmes will be well placed to make informed food choices, without the sense of guilt or judgement that so often surrounds “diet”.
  • The programmes also help to develop body confidence and help children learn that health gain can happen without having to change your size or shape.
  • Finally, older pupils are able to develop critical consumer skills, enabling them to understand how our food environment influences our decisions about what to eat.

We are confident that children who experience ‘Smart Start’ through early learning and childcare, ‘High 5’ in primary school, and a ‘Food & Mood’ programme in lower High school, will be able to develop a healthy relationship with food.

These lesson plans and resources have all been developed with Curriculum for Excellence in mind. You can be confident that key experiences, outcomes and milestones for health & wellbeing will be achieved.

Food is such a rich theme for learning across the curriculum. While the programmes on this site are largely about health & wellbeing; food is also a great theme for learning about sustainability too.

If Highland children are able to learn about both Health & Wellbeing and sustainability through food, they are more likely to be both healthy consumers and responsible citizens.

So…good luck and don’t forget to let us know how you are getting on by telling us your story!
